Grandma's Escarole and Beans and Cookbook Offer

A classic favorite Grandma made often. She called this depression food because when she was growing up in the 1900's this was inexpensive and fed the whole family. We make this often and everyone loves it. A great meal in itself anytime especially with a crusty loaf of Italian bread.
Grandma was 16 years old when she came to America from Rome, Italy. Later married John Colenzo also came from Italy.
When both my grandparents came to America, they got married and resided in Utica, New York.

 The years of living in what was referred to as "little Italy" became one of the best areas to eat  and known for great Italian food. The area today still is.  Utica is also noted for fabulous bakeries that make tomato pie, pastaciotti, fried dough, lemon ice, Italian pastries and cookies that are the area's specialties. There is a special section in the book just for the 
Utica New York Specialties that mom made 
and handed down.

Escarole is an ingredient that I'm not sure I've ever cooked with. I love hearing about your family---what a big upheaval for your grandma to move to the states as a teen!
