Royal Icing

Royal icing is used for decorating cookies and cakes. I prefer to use only meringue powder instead of egg whites. I feel it's safer. This is a great recipe to make special characters and decorations to match the theme to any children's birthday party, for weddings and any other events or functions.

You can find the cake decorating tools in my shop at the top portion of my blog page labeled "Shop with me".

Easy Creating Fun Characters

I have made royal icing for years. When my children were little I would find their favorite characters in coloring books that they liked.

I then traced those coloring book photo's with the royal icing. Let it dry until hard and placed it on the cake. It was so simple.

I made Batman, Superman, Popeye, just to name a few. All I did was take the coloring book page, placed it onto a cookie sheet and taped it down.  I then covered the photo with wax paper.

After I made the frosting, I tinted it with the colors of whatever my character was.

Using the cake decorating pastry tips and bags, I then filled in the coloring page with the frosting.

I let it dry until hard. Took a spatula and viola,  slid it onto the cake.

I loved the looks on their little faces to see how excited they got when they saw their favorite cartoon character on their birthday cake.

Fun Creating For the Kids

Now I will make them for my grandchildren since my kids are grown. I get to have fun all over again, watching them.

My grandson loves Olaf, so I made the frosting a little thicker to give him a snowy look for his upcoming birthday, Antonio will be 4 years old this year.

I used a coloring book page of Olaf and put him on the cookie sheet with wax paper and traced him with Royal icing.

or a smooth flat look just add more water.

That will give you a smooth sheen using thinner icing and easier to flow depending on your projects.

Keep Icing Safe

Over the years I was always leary about using egg whites because even pasteurized there still is a small chance for salmonella.

I continued to use powdered meringue and felt it was safer.

If you would like to use egg white its 3 ounces of pasteurized egg whites, 4 cups of powdered sugar and 1 teaspoon vanilla. Whip until smooth with and electric mixer on high.

Royal Icing is the perfect icing to make to create fun and exciting cakes and favorite kids characters that make them smile.

Royal Icing

Royal icing is used for decorating cookies and cakes. It goes on smooth and dries hard. Store it in the airtight container, covered with a plastic wrap and a lid in the refrigerator. It also can be kept at room temperature for up to 2 weeks, you will have to remix it before using.

instructions:

16 ounces of powdered sugar
2 tablespoons meringue powder
1/2 cup water

In an bowl using and electric mixer, beat ingredients for 7 minutes until smooth and free flowing. If its too thick add a little water, too thin add more sugar.

Place pastry tip any size writing tip ( I use a #2) in a pastry bag, add coloring to the if needed.  Use the icing  to pipe outlines and decorate cookies or decorations for cakes.

I find it easiest to use a coloring book photo, place wax paper over the photo. Trace the photo with the icing. Let dry or freeze. Lift off the pan and place on the cake.
You can easily decorate cookies with this icing.

Tip: keep a wet towel over the bowl. It will start to dry out if left uncovered.

Note: It is safer for small children and pregnant woman to use the meringue powder than real egg whites due to the possible contamination of salmonella.
