Instructions

  1. Coat the inside of a 2 1/2- to 5-quart slow cooker with cooking spray.
  2. Blend the flour and baking powder in a small bowl in a medium bowl and set aside. In a larger bowl, mix the butter and chocolate in the microwave or over a pan of simmering water.
  3. Mix in the flour mixture with this until smooth.
  4. Add 2/3 cup of sugar, 3 tablespoons of cocoa, vanilla extract, salt, milk, and the egg yolk and mix well in another bowl.
  5. Add that mixture to the flour mixture and stir until thoroughly mixed.
  6. Pour the batter into the crockpot and spread it evenly along the bottom.
  7. In a medium bowl, whisk together the remaining ingredients, white and brown sugars, cocoa, rum or vanilla, and the hot water until the sugar is dissolved.

  9. Even when done, the cake will be very moist and floating on a layer of molten chocolate, but you'll know it's ready when nearly all of the cake is set and the edges begin to pull away from the sides of the pot.
  10. When it's done, turn off the power and remove the lid, then serve it in bowls immediately topped with whipped cream or ice cream. Makes 6 to 8 servings.
  11. Cake Mix Version :
  12. In a large bowl, add the cake mix with the oil, milk and eggs.
  13. Beat using an electric mixer for 2 minutes.
  14. Pour this into a greased crockpot/slow cook heavily sprayed.
  15. Beat the milk with the pudding in another bowl, pour over the top.
  16. Don't stir this, it's the lava layer!
  17. Sprinkle next with chips on top.
  18. Cover and slow cooker for 2 hours.
