Learn how to make homemade baked cake donuts just as beautiful as in a bakery!
If you haven't tried baked donuts, they are so easy, light and actually fun even if you hate baking!
Today I made two different flavored donuts so you have two recipes to love.
One is a baked vanilla spice that has a hint of cinnamon and a little nutmeg in the batter.
The other is a baked light donut with sour cream and vanilla.
Either one is delicious and has the same delicious white chocolate glaze on top.
Having had donuts with that cinnamon taste in them growing up was a favorite with powdered sugar on them.
You can dip them in chocolate frosting, vanilla frosting or roll in cinnamon and sugar or powdered sugar.
Both recipes are very basic flavors easy to make and so versatile.
You can decorate these baked donuts any way you like.
You could even tint the frosting and make them festive for any event or to your party theme with matching sprinkles.
Easy Baked Donuts
Easy to make baked donuts are a breeze.
They are so delicious and I love making them.
Both flavors are perfect anytime, I just love the change of flavors and texture in each one.
Baked donuts last at room temperature freshly baked donuts (not cream-filled) for about 1 to 2 days at normal room temperature.
If baking for only two people, freeze them, they thaw out in no time!
Vanilla Spice Donuts or Sour Cream?
I have two different recipes for you today, one is a fall baked vanilla donut with some spice, the other I made during the warmer months that is a sour cream cake donut and both are fabulous.
I took photos of both kinds, they look similar, the batters are both perfect for baking donuts and there are several options for glazing and tips.
Baking donuts is so much easier than standing over a hot stove frying them.
They don't even take long to whip up and at the most 10 to 12 minutes to bake!
What quicker impressive dessert can be better to serve with that cup of Joe?!
My baked vanilla donuts are with a little cinnamon spice and everything nice for that quick warm up in the winter!
Sour Cream Baked Donuts
Summertime donuts for me are vanilla and lighter in flavor like these.
A cake donut, very light and airy and the perfect start of anyone's day!
I just love the smell of these baking with that pure vanilla extract.
Easy Tips
- Do not overmix the batters on either one, just fold in the dry ingredients
- Always preheat the over
- Put the wet ingredients and dry in separate bowls
- Use a ziplock bag filled with batter to fill your donut hole trays
- The pans are a must to make baked donuts
- This batter can be fried in a deep frying pan and using an ice cream scoop to release the batter into the oil
- Do Not Overbake these!
- Either donut can have tinted frostings or extracts added to the glazes for a change
- Both donuts freeze well
- You can also use these donuts for fruit and whipped cream dessert and leave them plain
Tools
- Donut non-stick pans found in any bake shop online

Fun Ideas
As I will give you the recipes for regular frosting and ideas to change them up below, I also use these for other desserts.
The donuts don't have to be frosted at all.
The cake is so delicious you can eat them plain or dressed up and not frosted at all.
What do I mean by that?
Add some of your favorite cut-up fruits on top and a dollop of whipped cream.
These donuts are versatile in every way and can be frozen, thawed and used as a cake dessert and even making a layered trifle with cake, pudding and whipped cream, leaving them whole, they look so pretty.
Flavor the frostings in lemon, orange, cherry extracts for a delightful change or assortment of flavors!
Ganache or Frosting?
I love white chocolate or even regular melting dark chocolate to dip these in.
The recipe with white chocolate is included in the recipe card for it.
However, if you rather have frosting all you need for the chocolate frosting: 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar, 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder, 1/4 cup milk, and 1 teaspoon vanilla. Mix all together and dip the donut.
For vanilla frosting: 2 cups powdered sugar, 2 1/2 tablespoon buttermilk or whole milk, 1/2 teaspoon vanilla mix all together and dip the donuts. Tint and flavor changes can be made omit the vanilla and add what flavors you prefer.
You could also just roll the donuts into powdered sugar or in a cinnamon and sugar mixture.
Baked Donuts
Growing up all the kids loved moms apple fritter donuts, pizza fritta (which is Italian fried dough) and other delights that were fried on the stove.
What innovation to have a donut pan and bake them in a snap and so easy and healthier!
Again, you can fry to your heart's delight if you wish, but try them baked they are amazing!
Decorating
Both donut recipes are much different in taste.
Baking them and removing them from the pan, they look the same.
If you are making both kinds in one day, just change the frosting color and tint the white to your favorite colors!
You also sprinkle nuts, coconut, chocolate chips and pretty colored sugars on top!
Batters
The Baked Vanilla Spice donuts batter is thinner than the sour cream batter.
It actually is even easier to use the ziplock bag and flows easily.
The Sour Cream Spice Baked donuts are a heavier batter that works fine with a teaspoon more like a cookie batter.
Taste and Texture
Both textures of these donuts are cakey.
I love cake donuts that's why I prefer the vanilla spice donuts rolled into cinnamon and sugar for winter fall flavors.
The sour cream donuts can even have a flavor added to the frosting like cherry or even lemon instead of chocolate or vanilla frosting.

The kids love to drizzle chocolate and vanilla icings making a marble effect.
Your creative ideas can be endless!
There are so many possibilities to change up these flavors with the Sour cream baked donuts.
I really love the spiced one rolled in cinnamon sugar but if you have other suggestions please leave me a comment on what you love!
