German Chocolate Cake Mix Recipe

Sunday, August 30, 2015
The name German chocolate cake is a little deceiving as it is not actually a German dessert and traditionally the cake is a lighter-colored cake with a mild chocolate taste and the entire cake is usually covered in coconut pecan frosting.

Coconut has always been a favorite of mine with a combination of chocolate and pecans, it's totally scrumptious.

The only difference here will be this isn't made from scratch, I used a mix, and being a full-time manager I am away from home so much I wanted my favorite cake fast and easy.

You may also like to try our German Chocolate Coconut Bars (really a brownie topped with this yummy gooey frosting!) also totally divine!

I couldn't scrimp or cut corners on my favorite part, the decadent German coconut pecan frosting, but it takes just a few minutes to make and so worth it!

Prep time: 10 MinCook time: 35 MinTotal time: 45 Min

Ingredients

  • 1 package Devil's Food Cake Mix
  • 1 package instant chocolate pudding
  • 4 eggs
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 1/2 cup warm water
  • 2 tablespoon instant coffee granules
  • 1/2 cups chopped German Chocolate, bittersweet, semi-sweet chips, or milk chocolate chips
  • 2 - 14 ounce cans of sweetened condensed milk
  •  1/2 cup butter
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1 - 1/2 cups coconut toasted reserve 1/2 cup for garnishing
  • 1  - 1/2 cups chopped pecans reserve some for garnishing
  • Chocolate Ganache:
  • 8 ounces coarsely chopped German chocolate
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 tablespoon butter

Instructions

  1. For the Cake:
  2. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  3. Grease and flour two 9 inch cake pans, set aside.
  4. In a large mixer bowl add all the ingredients and blend together for around 3 to 4 minutes except chips fold them in last.
  5. Divide evenly into the two prepared pans. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes or until the toothpick is clean in the middle, then cool completely on wire racks.
  6. Frost lightly with chocolate ganache then I add a light topping of the coconut frosting and garnish.
  7. Chocolate Ganache Instructions:
  8. Heat cream in a small saucepan.
  9. Place chocolate in a bowl and pour the heated cream over it let sit for 5 minutes until chocolate softens stir in butter until smooth.
  10. German Chocolate Frosting:
  11. Boil the milk butter and brown sugar for 25 or more minutes until the mixture thickens like pudding. Stir in the coconut and pecans.
  12. To assemble the cake:
  13. Spread the first cake layer with the ganache
  14. Note: If you're stacking these cakes then add coconut frosting first then top with another cake, then use the ganache on top with coconut frosting last.
  15. I do two separate cakes and freeze one, ( we are only two people to enjoy this deliciousness!)
  16. Mine showing is some ganache thinly spread first on top, then the coconut frosting on one round cake.
