Baked, or Air Fried Zucchini Fries

Wednesday, June 3, 2020
Whether you bake, air fry, and deep fry these zucchini sticks they turn out to be a delicious appetizer and the family loves them.

Zucchini fries are either lightly breaded or shaken in seasoned flour then any cooking method you chose turns into a delicious way to serve them.

We love these either dipped in marinara sauce or even in a homemade ranch dressing but there are several dipping sauces I make you can choose from.

Scroll down to the printable recipe card and there is recipes for the seasoned flour methods along with alternative coatings I use for diabetic version.

You will also find all 3 cooking methods for making the fries in the air fryer, baked or deep-fried whatever you enjoy I hope you like our version of these zucchini appetizers.

They are easy to make and fun to eat and also a great way to get kids to eat their vegetables.

Baked Zucchini Fries Recipe

Baked, Fried or Air Fried

The first photo above is baked zucchini fries on parchment paper for easy release and clean up.

We love ours served with a side of marinara sauce.

The second photo is the flour-coated fried version.

I have made all three methods for cooking zucchini fries and here's what you need to know.

Baked and the Air Fried are the healthier versions of cooking methods for this recipe using less oil.

Deep frying of course is the other alternative to cooking them and will contain more fat.

All cooking methods are in the printable recipe card below.

  3. Frying pan for deep frying
  4. Measuring spoon
  5. Tongs
  6. Paper towels for draining the grease when frying

Other Vegetables To Try:

  • Cauliflower
  • Brussels sprouts

  • Carrot sticks
  • Okra
  • Eggplant sticks

Flour Coating Version:

  • flour or almond flour
  • cornstarch

Tips:

  • For baking: dip in oil first then bread crumbs or pork rinds and bake do not turn, use parchment paper to bake them on

Here are recipes on how to make zucchini fries baked, air fried, or deep-fried with two different coatings we love for you to try. All
cooking methods are in the complete printable instructions.

Ingredients:

  • 3 small zucchini sliced lengthwise then into sticks
  • 1/4 cup grated parmesan romano cheese blended and more for garnish
  • 1 cup panko bread crumbs
  • 1 teaspoon granulated garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon each dried oregano, basil, and parsley
  • 1/4 cup Italian flavored breadcrumbs or use crushed pork rinds for diabetic versions
  •  1/4 cup olive oil
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • Garnish: more grated cheese and marinara sauce for dipping
  • Note: For Deep Frying Zucchini:
  • I use a flour coating instead of bread crumbs (or almond flour for diabetic version omit the cornstarch when using almond flour).
  • add 1 cup flour and 2 tablespoons cornstarch into a plastic bag with the same herbs and spices above.
  • Rinse zucchini sticks into cold water, do not dry them or you can use beaten egg to coat them first then shake into the flour.
  • After you shake the sticks into the flour to coat them, then proceed to deep fry in a frying pan with the 1/4 cup oil on medium heat until browned on both sides.
  • You can use the panko but would need to dip them in a beaten egg first.
  • I do not recommend the flour coating for the Air Frying method. See notes below for air frying.

Instructions:

  1. Baking Method:
  2. Heat oven to 400 degrees
  3. Cut into long sticks even in length, about 1/4 inch thickness.
  4. In a large plastic bag add herbs, cheese, Italian breadcrumbs, salt, pepper, and panko shake well.
  5. Add zucchini to pie plate to coat with oil.
  6. Place half the bread crumbs scattered on a parchment-lined cookie sheet.
  7. Use tongs to place zucchini on top of breadcrumbs on a baking sheet, dripping off excess oil back into the pie plate.
  8. Sprinkle with remaining panko breadcrumbs mixture on top to coat the zucchini.
  9. Bake until golden brown they do not usually need turning the oil will crisp them. around 15 minutes.
  10. If you would like them crispier broil the tops for a few minutes on low then turn them.
  11. Alternative Cooking methods:
  12. For Air Frying: I use the panko breading method above for air frying.
  13. Place them on oil sprayed piece of aluminum foil and place into the basket of the air fryer.
  14. Air fry them for 12 minutes on 400 degrees and check to see if they are crispy and browned.
  15. For deep-frying:
  16.  I use the flour-coated method, rinse zucchini, shake them in seasoned flour.
  17. Heat the oil on medium heat and fry until golden brown on both sides.
  18. Drain on paper towels.
  19. Serve with your favorite dipping sauce or Italian marinara sauce and more grated cheese on top.

  16. I love zucchini fries...they are one of my all time appetizers. I remember about 30 years ago, a sweet little Italian lady (friend of family) gave me the recipe and instruction, but that was for deep frying, and in those days they didn't have Panko.
Love your new take on it, Claudia, and the Marinara dipping sauce, as well:D
