Chicken souvlaki recipe takes you to the streets of Athens!
Greek souvlaki is one of those meals I could easily eat every week without ever complaining.
It does not matter if it is lamb, chicken or pork souvlaki either, you can use whatever you like!
In Utica, New York this is a great Greek restaurant near our house that makes the most amazing lamb souvlaki.
I always visit there when I go home.
But, you do not need to go to a restaurant, because making souvlaki at home is very easy.
I love to prepare a full Greek feast including different types of souvlaki, Greek salad, souvlaki, and homemade pita bread.
Grilled or Oven Baked
Zesty Greek Chicken Souvlaki is great grilled or oven baked and so easy.
A fresh and healthy take on a classic Greek kabob recipe.
These easy chicken skewers are served with yogurt tzatziki.
Cut Chicken into Cubes
The word Souvlaki simply means “meat on skewers.”
The skewers are loaded with perfectly marinated grilled meat and topped with Tzatziki sauce.
When using wooden skewers, soak them first in water for at least ten minutes, or they’ll smoke during cooking
Marinade
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
1 juiced fresh lemon ( around 1/4 cup)
1 teaspoon garlic powder
4 boneless chicken breast cut into chunks (approximately 1 1/2 pounds)
approximately 1 teaspoon each, kosher salt, freshly ground black pepper, lots of oregano around 2 tablespoon
2 garlic cloves, peeled
1 tsp dried rosemary
1 tsp sweet paprika
1 tsp each Kosher salt and black pepper
1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil
1/4 cup dry white wine
2 bay leaves
Place chicken chunks in a medium-size bowl. Sprinkle with olive oil over the top, squeeze entire lemon over the olive oil. Shake oregano generously over the top of the chicken and add salt and pepper to your taste and the rest of any ingredients. I also like heat so I add a couple of shakes of cayenne pepper.
Marinate for 1 hour. Thread the chicken onto wooden skewers and grill 5 minutes on each side or till browned.
For the oven, place on in a cast iron skillet and bake at 4oo degrees until browned and the juice runs clear around 35 minutes.
You will love these! Serve with cucumber sauce or your favorite hot sauce!
