Tater Tot Shepherd's Pie

If you love a creamy cheese sauce, tater tots and ground beef casseroles, this is going to be a tasty addition to your casserole making this Tater Tot Shepherd's Pie.

Made with a creamy soup, sour cream with a ground beef sauce then baked all together topped with cheesy frozen tater tots baked to a crispy golden brown.

I love easy meals like this one and with just a few ingredients to keep on hand you can have this done in no time and it's a favorite 30-minute meal.

We made many pasta casseroles, economical bean meals and one-pan meals being on the go and busy lifestyles, we need those kinds of quick meals that fill you up and are tasty, this is one of them.

The first time I made this, I have to admit, it didn't look that great but tasted delicious so don't let the sloppy looking messy pan turn you away.

This isn't like a regular mashed potato shepherd's pie, this one has all the flavors but with a crunchy potato topping and much creamier beef.

Updated Traditional Shepherd's Pie

The original shepherd's pie has many recipes and versions and when we first tasted this casserole-style with tater tots, immediately everyone said this taste just like shepherd's pie just with a cheesy cream sauce.

I adapted to the recipe by adding corn instead of peas you would find in an original style cottage pie or shepherd's pie and of course tater tots are used instead of mashed potatoes.

This basic recipe can be changed to what your family prefers, substitute a different cheese, shredded potatoes or other kinds of potato frozen, any vegetable you like and even use a different kind of cream soup as written and mentioned in this recipe card below.

There is no right or wrong, use what you have on hand for those basic ingredients and create this new and innovative recipe any way you like.

This is a delicious creamy cheesy ground beef and potato meal is so easily made in no time and one of those comfort foods the kids can't get enough of! Tater tots with a cheese topping and baked to golden perfection!

Ingredients:

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup sour cream
  • 1 can cream soup (cream of chicken, mushroom or cheddar cheese soup)
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • salt, pepper
  • 1 teaspoon granulated garlic powder
  • 2 cups extra sharp shredded cheddar cheese divided
  • 2 cups frozen tater tots or more to cover the top of the casserole
  • 1 cup of more of frozen or canned corn drained (or use peas and corn combination)

Instructions:

How to cook Tater Tot Shepherds Pie

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
  2.  In a large skillet, cook beef on medium heat until beef is no longer pink.
  3. Drain the grease, then stir in the corn, soup, 1 cup cheese, milk, sour cream, garlic, Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper to taste.
  4. Pour beef mixture into an oil spray casserole pan, I used a 10-inch deep round casserole pan and like a deeper amount of the cream mixture on the bottom.
  5.  Top with frozen tater tots, not on top of each other and then sprinkle remaining cheese on top.
  6.  Bake uncovered for 25-30 minutes or until cheese is bubbly and tater tots are golden browned and crispy.
  7. Note: if the tater tots are done you can also broil the top on low for around 2 minutes for extra crispiness.

  1. I've never been one for lamb, but you made it look amazing! I'd definitely try it!

  2. This looks like a much better version of shepherds pie than the one I had at the Irish festival years ago. I am glad that you have noted that the gravy is served separately-I would rather measure it out to my own liking than have some soupy serving.
Great choice of meat and nicely layered-thanks for sharing this one Claudia-yum!

  8. Claudia...This dish has been a staple on our menu. Mostly done the same way except for a few twists here an there. The garlic mashed potatoes will certainly be a twist I'll have to try next time as well ;o)

Have a great day and flavourful wishes,
    Claudia

  12. Grumpy loves shepherds pie but I didn't grow up with it so I don't know much about it or think of making it. I should try it for him but I would probably skip the lamb...I have not ever been able to eat lamb. Maybe is psychological...not sure!
