Old Fashioned Vanilla or Chocolate Ice Milk

Sunday, April 5, 2020
This is a simple old-fashioned frozen Vanilla or Chocolate Ice Milk recipe that dates back to the 1940s when my mom's mom use to make this for her.

Using simple pantry ingredients, this dessert can be made with or without an ice maker.

Growing up we loved this refreshing dessert all summer long and with a little patience and hand stirring you can have the most delicious ice milk overnight.

The difference is using milk makes this a much lighter texture and is not like heavy cream-based ice creams.

Additions can be added to these frozen confections like nuts, chocolate chips, fruits, and many more suggestions I will give you.

The ice milk is delicious alone, made into a banana split or in an ice cream cone.

Our simple recipe for ice milk has a rich delicious creamy texture and whether it's chocolate or vanilla the flavor is wonderful just using the standard supermarket milk.

We love ice milk along with delicious other ice creams we make like Cannoli Ice Cream, Double Chocolate Gelato Watermelon Sorbet, and Italian Lemon Ice.

Scroll down for either one of these old-fashioned recipes and enjoy a scoop or two!

Ice Milk

Ice milk can be made with any milk however the more water content with lower fat milk the icier it will be and the harder to keep the ice crystals from forming.

I prefer to use whole milk, coconut milk, cashew, or almond milk, for lactose-free milk options for those who can have regular milk allergies and no tolerance to them.

These all still have fewer calories than heavy cream-based ice cream.

One thing I have found is ice milk melts quicker than ice cream does so you will want to eat it inside!

If you are counting calories, ice milk is around 8 percent less fat than a heavy cream-based style ice cream.

Therefore this will be great for dieters and a great treat and a true non-guilty pleasure.

Of course, if you do add the additions to your delectable ice milk, the calories go up with the flavor!

Chocolate ice milk is made with pure good grade chocolate and milk and has only two ingredients another simple indulgent you can make quickly and it's super simple.

A Few Tips

  1. To ensure you have a smooth texture, stirring this as it starts to freeze and it gets solid is an essential step to achieving the best results
  2. If using an ice cream maker, after the milk churns for 25 minutes or until it starts to thicken, pour it into the container and stir it occasionally after freezing until solid
  3. When doing this by hand I recommend you stir it every hour until ice crystals form then freeze it overnight.
