Sunday Dinners and Dessert
We love Sunday family day with Traditional Sunday Sauce, Meatballs baked cavatelli pasta, and of course, we always save room for dessert.
Usually, dessert ends with our favorite Italian Lemon Ice, but this one is a favorite also.
On a hot summer day in July, this certainly is the ice cream of choice here.
It's bursting with great flavors, subtle, not too sweet, and the perfect Italian dessert after that big meal!
It sure is easier than making the regular pastry, which I make at Easter time usually the original pastry, Italian Cannoli .
The garnish made it even more authentic in flavor with the addition of brushed Marsala on it and butter.

How To Make This No Churn without an Ice Cream Maker No PROBLEM!
Well, this is one tool I love for the creaminess, is the ice maker, it provides texture, however, not to worry, no ice maker no problem!
Place the mixture in a deep ice cream freezer-safe container and freeze for 45 minutes.
As it begins to freeze near the edges, remove it from the freezer and stir vigorously with a spatula or
if you have a handheld mixer or blender, the creamier and less grainy the better.
Return to the freezer.
Continue to check the mixture every 30 minutes, stirring vigorously as it’s freezing.
Repeat this process for 2 to 3 hours, or until frozen.
Tips and Suggestions
- Drizzle the cones with Marsala wine then crumble them for an authentic flavor
- Add rum extract or Kahula, instead of vanilla to change the flavor
- Add chopped maraschino cherries blotted dry just before it's done churning
- Make sure you follow the manufacturer's suggestions for time, you don't want to over-churn heavy cream
- Use store-bought ice cream toppings and pistachios
- Crumbled cookies and cake crumbs are other delicious toppings suggestion
- My kids just love topping this with warmed hot fudge sauce!

- Sugar cone brushed with 1 tablespoon melted butter and 1/2 teaspoon Marsala wine or use crushed cannoli shells

- almond-flavored cookies crushed

Cannoli Ice Cream

Ingredients
- 1 cup milk
- 15-ounce container Ricotta whole milk
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
- 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
- pinch of salt
- 3/4 cup sugar
- 3/4 cup mini chocolate chips
- 1 cup heavy cream placed in the freezer while preparing the base for at least 1/2 hour
- Optional garnish: Sugar cone brushed with 1 tablespoon melted butter and 1/2 teaspoon Marsala wine
Instructions
- In a small saucepan heat just until all is blended together, Ricotta, whole milk, sugar, salt, cinnamon, and vanilla. Place the heavy cream into the warmed mixture. Place all of this in the freezer for one hour or overnight in a covered container.
- Put the mixture in the ice cream maker to package instructions, (usually done in around 20 minutes with mine).
- At the end around 5 minutes before the churning has completed, add the chopped cookies and mini chocolate chips.
- Freeze for at least 2 hours before serving or use it as a softer serve ice cream immediately.
- For the sugar cone garnish, melt butter and stir in Marsala wine.
- Brush the sugar cones with this mixture and break off pieces or serve whole, placed on top of ice cream and serve.
