Ingredients

  • We have grown pineapples here in sunny Florida for years now, but a word of warning: you need patience as it does take a few years to germinate a new one.
  • Growing pineapple from the top of a fresh pineapple is super fun and a rewarding hobby especially since it is so easy to do. Here are some simple guidelines to follow.
  • Pineapple plants are a symbol of hospitality.
  • You will get only one pineapple per plant.
  • If the top comes off easily when plucked it's ripe. They need to ripen on the plant not in the home so make sure you don't pick it too soon! If it gets all yellow it will be the sweetest pineapple on the plant you ever ate.
  • Tip: If you live in Florida you can plant directly in the dirt heavily watered will make a bigger pineapple also try using a little bit of Epsom salt in the dirt every three weeks to grow bigger pineapples! Enjoy!

Instructions

  1. Choose a fresh pineapple from your local store or farmers market. Look for one that is healthy green leaves that also firm and golden skin color. Do not choose pineapples with brown and gnarly leaves.
  2. First, cut the top off using a sharp knife. Cut off the leafy top of the pineapple about 1/2 inch below the base of the leaves. Remove any fruit under the crown.
  3. Remove the lower leaves from the crown and expose about an inch from the stem.
  4. Let the crown dry for a few days, that will prevent the plant from rotting.
  5. Fill a pot with a well-draining bottom and fill it with potting soil and peat moss.
  6. Make a well into the soil plant the crown into the soil and push down on it to get a firmly secured in place.
  7. Add just a little bit of water.
  8. Place it where it can get warmth and sun.
  9. Once the crown gets proper roots and starts to grow you can transplant it into a larger pot or directly in your garden.
  10. Pineapple will germinate fruit anywhere from 18 months to 3 years so patience is a virtue my mom always said.
