Homemade Sausage Roll Recipe
1 recipe homemade sausage or 2 lbs store bought loose mild, sweet or hot Italian sausage
2 pounds homemade pizza dough or store bought
1 medium size green pepper sliced thin
6 slices cut thick of provolone cheese
4 slices cut thick mozzarella cheese
Optional: you can also add to the frying pan mushrooms, onions, tomatoes or use pepperoni instead of sausage or both.
In a medium size fry pan fry the 2 pounds of sausage adding some minced garlic, Italian seasoning and saute with peppers until sausage begins to get very browned (I like is a little crispy). Add 1/4 white wine pinot grigio and simmer until the wine is reduced by half.
Spread dough out on a floured board rolling out around 1/2 inch thick. Place cheese on the dough first, then spread cooled sausage on the dough. Sprinkle with grated cheese. Roll up the dough folding all side in first then like a jelly roll would look. Put on a greased deep cookie sheet seam side down.
I like to brush with oil, sprinkle with garlic powder and then more grated cheese on top of the dough. Let dough rest for 15 minutes while you preheat the oven to 400 degrees.
Bake at 400 degrees until browned on top.
