It wasn't until I was in my late 20's that I enjoyed it topping it off with a shot of my favorite liquor.
This is his recipe and a tradition every year to make in his memory.
Dad was a big fan of eggnog and I also absolutely love eggnog plain but Dad loved his with a shot of booze in it!
If you would like to add alcohol to your eggnog, the traditional choice is to add brandy rum or bourbon.
We also make almond Amaretto eggnog which is another family favorite and so delicious!
If you've never ever had eggnog, to me it's a creamy glass of heaven with a buttery scotch flavor, just my thought, and the best to try would always be made from scratch.

Easy Step by Step
- place milk, cloves, 1/2 teaspoon vanilla, and cinnamon in a saucepan and slowly heat but do not boil this mixture
- whisk the sugar and eggs into a bowl
- add eggs and sugar to the slightly heated milk mixture in spoonfuls whisking quickly
- return to heat until thickens
- add the cream and alcohol if using
- refrigerate overnight

Dad's Eggnog or Almond Nog
A delicious holiday drink made with an egg mixture and spices. Can be served with or without liquors.

Ingredients
- Eggnog
- 4 cups milk
- 5 whole cloves
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 12 egg yolks
- 1 1/2 cups sugar
- 4 cups heavy cream
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- Alcohol is optional:
- 2 1/2 cups light rum, brandy, bourbon, or whiskey
- Almond Nog
- 3 cups almond milk
- 3 eggs yolks
- 3 1/2 tablespoons of sugar (or sugar substitute to equal same amount)
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- pinch of nutmeg
- Optional: 1 shot of Amaretto Liqueor
Instructions
- Eggnog:
- Combine milk, cloves, 1/2 teaspoon vanilla, and cinnamon in a saucepan, and heat over the lowest setting for 5 minutes.
- Slowly bring the milk mixture to a boil.
- In a large bowl, combine egg yolks and sugar.
- Whisk together until fluffy.
- Whisk the hot milk mixture slowly into the eggs by spoonfuls.
- Pour the mixture back into the saucepan.
- Simmer over medium heat, stirring constantly for 3 minutes, or until this thickens
- Do not allow the mixture to boil.
- Strain to remove cloves, and let cool for about an hour.
- Stir in rum, cream, 2 teaspoon vanilla, and nutmeg.
- Refrigerate overnight before serving.
- Almond Nog Instructions:
- Heat the ingredients in a small saucepan over medium heat whisking constantly until it starts to a slow simmer.
- Remove from heat chill.
- Pour into glasses, and sprinkle with nutmeg and a shot of Amaretto
