Comfort Food

I think this is called comfort food because it warms you up on cooler evenings.

It's an inexpensive meal, easy to make and with just a few pantry ingredients you have a hearty meal on the table.

Mom always made this in the colder months and we all enjoyed her homemade gravy with Grandma's homemade pasta noodles.

Sometimes she would make garlic mashed potatoes which were another favorite.

Changing it up a bit?

The chicken was another favorite. Mom would use chicken instead of beef sometimes.

Just change the gravy to chicken or even turkey.

Marsala wine goes famously with either beef or chicken, everything else stays the same but the gravy.

Mom's salisbury steak has a beef gravy with mushrooms in it.

Mom always made it this way, if your family doesn't like a mushroom gravy then omit them.

She also used more garlic and no onions, however, the original recipe old fashioned mushroom beef gravy had onions in it.

You decide and alter the recipes to the way your family likes this.

When I was working full time, I had to cut corners to get a meal fast on the table and this was it.

1940 Something

Mom always worked hard.

Back in 1940, she ran her own deli right from our house.

We always had the best meals and were so lucky.

When she started working at a local supermarket as a manager, I was around 11 years old, and learned to cook everything she made.

I still remember how grateful she was to come home to a homemade meal, she taught me everything I knew.
