Banana Chocolate Chip Oatmeal Cookies

Tuesday, October 1, 2019
Banana Chocolate Chip Oatmeal Cookies are easy to make with a few simple ingredients and take only around 20 minutes.

These Banana Chocolate Chip Cookies are one of those homemade treats that make the kitchen smell absolutely wonderful while they bake.

They’re soft, chewy, lightly spiced with cinnamon, and packed with the comforting combination of ripe banana and oats.

Seriously, the next time your bananas turn black, try these cookies instead of tossing them.

I always have bananas that are brown and overripe and used to throw them out too, but not anymore!

Finally, a banana cookie to make instead of the classic banana bread. We all love these cookies; this is a great change and a cross between cookie and cake-like!

Adding chocolate chips and walnuts makes these cookies scrumptious, but you can leave them plain if you prefer. Also, try our Banana Sour Cream Streusel Bars; these are also a great way to use up bananas!

If you love fruit cookies, you may also like our blueberry drop cookies and oatmeal raspberry bars.

They’re perfect with a cup of coffee, as an afternoon snack, or packed into lunchboxes for a homemade treat.

What Makes These Banana Cookies Special

It's the combination of ingredients that makes these cookies stand out.

The banana keeps the cookies moist, the oats provide a satisfying chew, and cinnamon brings out the warm flavor of the banana. Add chocolate chips and you've got a cookie that tastes like a cross between a classic oatmeal cookie and banana bread.

They're also incredibly forgiving. If you have a handful of nuts, some leftover coconut, or a few different baking chips in the pantry, toss them in.

You can combine the additions to create a completely different cookie every time you make them.

Tips for Making the Best Banana Cookies

  1. Use ripe bananas: The riper the banana, the more natural sweetness and banana flavor it will add. Bananas with plenty of brown spots are perfect for baking.
  2. Measure the mashed banana: Bananas can vary greatly in size, so for consistent cookies, measure the mashed banana rather than simply using one whole banana.
  3. Don't skip the oats: Old-fashioned oats give these cookies their hearty, chewy texture. I recommend using old-fashioned rolled oats rather than quick oats when possible.
  4. Add your favorite chocolate: Semi-sweet chocolate chips are delicious, but milk chocolate, dark chocolate, or white chocolate chips can all work beautifully.
  5. Let the cookies cool: These cookies will continue to set as they cool. Give them a few minutes before moving them from the baking sheet.
  6. Don't be afraid to mix and match: The beauty of these cookies is that you don't have to choose just one addition.
  7. Chocolate chips and pecans are wonderful together, but chocolate, coconut, and peanut butter chips are another delicious combination.
