Homemade Fresh Pumpkin Pie

Sunday, October 11, 2026
There is something special about a homemade pumpkin pie made from scratch, especially when you start with a fresh sugar pie pumpkin.

This classic fall dessert has a wonderful old-fashioned flavor, a creamy texture, and all those warm spices that make pumpkin pie a favorite for Thanksgiving, holiday gatherings, and cozy family dinners.

While canned pumpkin is convenient, making your own pumpkin puree from a fresh sugar pie pumpkin brings a little extra love to this traditional dessert.

Sugar pie pumpkins are smaller, sweeter, and generally less stringy than the larger pumpkins used for carving. Their naturally rich flavor makes them a wonderful choice for homemade pumpkin desserts.

If you have never made pumpkin puree from scratch, don't let the extra step intimidate you. With a little preparation, you can turn a fresh pumpkin into a beautiful homemade pie that tastes like autumn in every bite.

It's really not that difficult; getting the pumpkin cooked is the first order of business, and I do mine in a slow cooker overnight in water.

Another family favorite during Thanksgiving week is a delicious Classic Pumpkin Roll filled with cream cheese for dessert; it's a must on our holiday table.
