Chicken Fried Steak

Chicken fried steak, also known as country-fried steak, is an American breaded boneless cut of beef that coated with either cracker crumbs, or seasoned flour then pan-fried.

This style and method of fried steak are popular throughout the Southern states in America, this is my version of making this delicious T-bone using some of the ingredients found in that recipe.

I use a cracker coating and the steak is dipped in a very well flavored egg and buttermilk mixture.

Flavorful steak that is perfect at any time of the year but great comfort food in the cooler months.

You can choose to use any kind of steak cuts you like, we are big T-bone fans here and that's what I am using in this recipe.

Most of the Chicken fried steak recipes are made with a boneless steak and pounds into cutlets.

This is a chicken-fried T-bone steak coated with delicious crushed buttery crackers seasoned with Italian herbs and spices fried then baked.

ingredients:

  • Two - 2 to 3-inch thick T-bone steaks or pick another steak you like
  • 1 or 2 sleeves of buttery flavored crackers crushed into crumbs leaving a little coarse
  • 1 egg beaten
  • 1 cup buttermilk or use whole milk with 1 tablespoon vinegar or lemon juice added
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher or regular salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper or cayenne pepper if you like heat
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • 2 tablespoons Worchestershire sauce
  • Canola, butter, peanut or vegetable oil for frying around 1/4 cup
  • Garnish with any kinds of fresh herbs, parsley, basil, rosemary all optional

instructions:

How to cook Chicken Fried Steak

  1. Heat around 1 inch of oil in a large deep frying pan (like a chicken deep fry pan) on medium heat.
  2. Place the crushed crackers in a large plastic bag or pie plate.
  3. In another pie plate add the Worcestershire sauce, egg, buttermilk, garlic powder, seasoning, salt, pepper,
  4. Dip each steak into the egg mixture and shake into cracker crumbs.
  5. Place each steak into the heated oil.
  6. Fry on one side until you see the bottom turn golden before flipping over using tongs.
  7. This should take around 4 to 6 minutes on each side until the coating is crispy and browned nicely.
  8. See below for options:
  9. Heat the oven to 350 degrees.
  10. The steak is rare fried and ready to eat.
  11. Place the steaks on parchment paper in a deep casserole dish.
  12. For a medium-rare steak finish in the oven for 10 minutes.
  13. For medium steak 15 minutes in the oven
  14. For well done 25 to 30 minutes.
  15. I finished cooking these steaks in the oven so the outside crust doesn't burn while frying in the pan if you need a longer time for how you like your steak done.
  16. Note: for using your Air Fryer,: place the steak on oil sprayed foil poke a few holes in it. Air Fry at 400 degrees for 10 minutes. Check for crunchy cracker crust, then continue until the outside is crispy and steak is done to your preference.
