These Apple Pie Sour Cream Muffins are the perfect breakfast muffin or brunch.

Maybe you're in a hurry and on the go, these are perfect to take along.

I just love the smell of these baking.

The aroma lingers long after they are baked and really shouts fall.

Easy, simple recipe that is a no-fail every time.

Apples, cinnamon, and sour cream make these over the top tender in texture and reminds you of apple pie in flavor.

These muffins are great warm with butter or a cold and nice alternative to the all the apple pies, apple cider, apple scones, apple donuts and even apple stuffing used with harvested apples.

Fall and Apple Season

What better way to start off your day with a freshly baked apple pie topped muffin?

Well, a great cup of coffee, cocoa or a big glass of milk will be a great addition to them.

They're perfect for school lunches, packed up for a car travel day with the family and the best snack when you get home from work!

The topping is so yummy! I love to make some cinnamon warmed homemade apple cider.

Apples We Like

Use any kind of cooking apples you like, I prefer a tart one over the sweeter kinds like a Cortland or Mcintosh, as the sugar enhances the flavors and they're softer in texture as they cook.

A mixture of cinnamon and sugar is the perfect topping. Apple Pie Sour Cream Muffin taste even better than they look!

Papers or no Papers?

I like to add the papers but I do have a little secret for you.

They look much better after they are baked, pop them out of the muffin tins, cool completely and place in paper liners for a prettier presentation and guess what else?

Ok, so you're not an apple fan?

  • Just mix the topping with another fruit, blueberry and peaches work great with these.
  • I also like using dried fruits along with the apples and nuts mixed in around 1/2 cup.
  • After they are baked if you have any left, store them in the refrigerator, they stay fresher longer and the water content in the apples will make them soggy if left out.

  • eggs

  • butter softened
  • pure vanilla extract
  • baking soda
  • baking powder
  • salt
  • flour
  • Topping:
  • apples pared cored and diced McIntosh, granny smith or Cortland
  • cinnamon or more to taste
  • brown sugar
  • Optional: walnuts, raisins


  • Do not overmix the batter
  • soften the butter
  • store muffins in the refrigerator in airtight containers
  • these are delicious warm spread with butter

Easy Homemade Apple Pie Sour Cream muffins with an apple pie topping, perfect for the first harvest during the fall season. They smell fabulous and taste even better!


  • Batter:
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 cup white sugar
  • 1 stick (1/2 cup butter) softened
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • Topping:
  • 1 or more large apples pared cored and diced McIntosh, granny smith or Cortland
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon or more to taste
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • Dot with a little butter on each one
  • Optional: 1/2 cup chopped walnuts, raisins or a mixture added to the apples


How to cook Apple Pie Sour Cream Muffins

  1. In a large mixing bowl, place all wet ingredients in the bowl. 
  2. Slowly add all the dry and mix with wet ingredients until a thick batter is evenly blended.
  3. Do not over mix the batter.
  4. Place batter in a lined cupcake tin or use the liners after as stated in my tips ( I use an ice cream scoop) and put 1 teaspoon of apple topping on each muffin, 
  5. Dot with the butter. 
  6. Bake in 350 preheated hot oven until brown around 25 minutes. Makes around 12.

  5. I find the recipe very frustrating.....does the butter go in the batter? Or is it just for on top? Not clear to me.

    1. the stick of butter goes into the batter. The you will dot the tops with a little bits of butter, around 1/4 teaspoon full
